I walked down to the shore this morning and observed a profusion of blue-mauve scabious flowers. This bloom is known as the pincushion floweror Devil’s Bit

The root is truncated and it was believed that the devil bit it off to stop humans using it for medical purposes, hence the name.
I find the names and historical uses of wildflowers fascinating.
